Me and my husband adore this recipe! I make it at least once a month. Instead of chili paste (because I can never find it) I use tomatoe paste and I add all the sauces until it tastes right to me. If it looks dry, I add chicken or beef broth. We love to mix the left overs with the rice and put in the fridge for the next day. Tastes even better the next day for lunch! Great recipe, thanks!

Quick, easy, and tasty. I couldn't find chili paste, so I used this Thai sweet and spicy chili sauce instead and it was fine. I would like to find the chili paste and try it next time I make it (there will be a next time). I also doubled the sauce mixture and for us, that would have been necessary. I used just red pepper and I added shredded carrots, broccoli, and cabbage. I think mushrooms would be good as well. Overall, very versatile recipe.

This was fantastic...I kind of miscalculated the amounts of ginger and garlic, but the result was fantastic. The ginger plays a key role in the dish, and it compliments the hot of the red pepper, and the tang of the garlic perfectly. I didn't use red bells, because of the cost in my area(at $2.99a pound, you'd probably agree), but the green pepper was perfect, nontheless. I did have to make my own chile paste using tomato paste, hot sauce, chile owder, and paprika, but the effect was the same. Everyone gobbledit up, and my friend, an aspiring chef, told me that he would make this at home, quite the compliment. Thank you for such a great way to use ordinary ground beef!!

I was pretty impressed with this dish. I was trying to find something quick and easy to use the ground turkey and brocolli in my fridge. I didn't have chile paste nor green peppers and used chicken broth instead of beef and it turned out wonderful. My daughter loved it and it is very versatile. Throw in what ever veggies you can find.
09/21/2007
This was really yummy. Instead of rice, I served it with lettuce cups and a quick sauce made of equal parts soy sauce, rice vinegar, and chile paste. Spicy, flavorful, and crisp!
02/27/2008
This was fast and easy and good! I used ground ginger, frozen sliced red, green and yellow peppers with onion and beef soup base. I added sliced water chestnuts for a little added crunch. This recipe could be so versatile. Just add veggies you like ( broccoli would be good). If you enjoy aisian food, you should really like this one.
08/10/2005
A very good meal! I used only green bell peppers to save $$ and tomato paste instead of chile. Also, I quadrupled the liquids. And, I served it with brown rice. I will definitely make this again!
03/17/2006
I only had one yellow pepper, but it worked out. I'm sure it is even better with the correct amount of peppers, no matter what color. I subbed 1 tbsp of dried parsley and a little more than 1 tsp of ground ginger. Since I did not have low-sodium soy sauce, I did regular and omitted the extra salt. I used Thai chili sauce for the paste, and basmati rice instead of jasmine. Jasmine rice is too much like eating perfume for me. Overall, I thought this dish was really easy, and really tasty, and I look forward to making it with the right amount of peppers!
08/25/2007
This has become a regular for our family. Substitute more crushed red pepper for the chile paste, and I add a lot more ginger and garlic for a bolder taste.
08/05/2009
I like the idea of having ground beef in a stir fry, as it's a use for hamburger that I hadn't seen before. And it worked quite well. However, I found this recipe to be quite bland as written. I added Chinese 5 Spice, Hoisin Sauce, Black Bean and Garlic sauce, and spicy Sriracha sauce which jazzed it up somewhat. I served it over brown rice which stood up well to the texture of the beef and the peppers. I will probably make it again since my kids (ages 6 & 3) ate it and it was very easy to put together.
02/04/2009
Fast, easy and very good. Thanks, Amanda! On the second time I made this, I added a diced yellow onion when cooking the beef and more than doubled the sauce ingredients (1 C beef stock,

I didn't have much hope for ground beef in an Asian recipe, but what a delightful new use for hamburger! I did follow some recommendations. I put in the onions and broccoli. And I put in a full cup of beef broth with some corn starch. We like sauce with our rice . Other than that, the ginger, soy sauce, and garlic did wonders. Thank you.
05/27/2011
Great flavor, just a little too hot for my taste. Hubby LOVED this!! Was better as leftovers mixed with the rice. Next time will cut back a little on the red pepper flakes.
02/24/2010
Delightful. Next time I will use pieces of beef rather than ground. Thanks.
05/03/2011
LOVE THIS! I added more Thai Chili Paste, love it hot! Also I use a lot of ginger & a full bunch of parsley. I let everything cook together while my rice is made in a rice cooker and then serve this over the white rice. SO SO GOOD!
12/26/2011
Very nice flavor. I didn't have ginger and I didn't use the hot pepper and chili sauce (because of my kids) and it still turned out really good. Thank you for an easy and tasty recipe.
02/28/2006
I wanted to like this, but I didn't like the hamburg with the rice and the flavor wasn't there for me...sorry.
11/26/2012
To make this dish taste the way it's supposed to, add honey to cut the acid of the peppers. Don't add so much that it makes the dish sweet, just until you can aptly taste the flavors. For me, that was several tablespoons.
04/04/2011
We have a ton of ground beef and I was so excited to find an Asian recipe with ground beef. We were not real impressed. It needs more flavor and sauce to be really good.
07/07/2011
loved it!!!! did add water chestnuts and fresh corn for some crunch
05/01/2011
AMAZING!
03/28/2011
This was delicious and very quick and easy to make. It was something new to try with ground beef. My husband and kids all loved it too.
01/05/2013
My husband really enjoyed this recipe. I used a red bell pepper, kale and water chestnuts.
11/13/2012
I read the reviews, but mostly changed it a little as I cooked it. I wanted more veg, so I steamed some green beans until about two-thirds done, then added it to the peppers as I stir-fried them. Added a half onion as well as the garlic. As I was stir-frying this I put the sauce ingredients in a bowl to blend: one can beef broth, 1/4 cup soy sauce, 2 tbsp sweet hot chile paste, 1/4 tsp black pepper, 1 tsp powdered ginger (didn't have fresh). I tasted and it seemed too sweet. I added 1/4 cup cider vinegar and 1 tbsp sesame oil. I poured the sauce in with the hamburger and let it simmer a bit. The sauce seemed too thin and watery, so I mixed about 1/3 cup cornstarch with 1/3 cup water, added and stirred. Thickened beautifully, of course. Forgot about the Worcestershire entirely! This all worked quite well, although I'd added more black pepper than I should have and it was on the hot side. My kids didn't complain about the green beans as much as usual. This version will go into the rotation, with changes on the veg as wanted.
10/06/2007
I did not have chili paste or ginger root and it still turned out great. If you are looking to do something with that extra hamburger in your freezer and are tired of tacos and meatloaf, this is it!
01/14/2011
good but needed more worcestershire sauce.
01/24/2012
I did not have the ginger, so I added some sugar. This has a nice heat. If you don't like spicy, omit those items which add it. I would try this again with broccoli, mushrooms and just one of the peppers. The sauce is nice and doesn't overpower the flavor of the veggies.
06/24/2006
I made this spur of the moment, so I had to use what I had on hand. I omitted the Worcestershire sauce and used extra soy sauce instead, ground ginger instead of fresh, and I added onions and mushrooms. We like spicy food, so I added some crushed red pepper as well. All in all, a great recipe and my husband, the pickiest eater in the world loved it!
08/10/2013
Excellent! I make it different every time substituting ingredients I have in fridge that day. More often than not, I leave out the vinegar altogether.
09/03/2004
Very bland and meaty - it tasted "hot" more than it actually tasted like anything. Not worth trying.
01/06/2008
This was delicious, just the right amount of spice! It was great for lunch the next day too. I'll be making this again, and more of it.
02/06/2008
This recipe as written I give 3 stars. It was a little bland - for some reason all of the flavors did not get incorporated very well into the dish. But it can easily be improved. Next time I'll probably double the "sauce" ingredients (along with the garlic and ginger) so that I can cook it longer without drying out. When the sauce cooks down it should become more flavorful. I will say that it was very easy - perfect for a mom!
08/17/2008
I have made this several times and I omitted the ginger and added a little vinegar and a teaspoon of sugar, for the chili paste I use Sriracha hot chili sauce. This is a quick and easy meal that my family loves. I gave the recipe 4 stars because I made changes to suit my personal taste.
04/03/2008
This is AMAZING :) I did not have fresh peppers on hand, so I did not add those. This would have more than five stars if it could and I will have to make a double batch next time because nobody got enough of it!!!
03/28/2009
Really good and light. The "sauce" isn't overpowering, just enough to moisten and mildly flavor the dish. I added broccoli, used red instead of green peppers, only had ginger paste on hand along with dried parsley. Dried parsley doesn't usually do it for me, but that was a good find - next time I'll use fresh basil to recreate the flavor of one of my favorite Thai restaurants. Any mix of veggies will do but the broccoli was nice. I'll add thin, baby green beans next time I get them at Costco. Quick fix and my husband enjoyed it so this is definitely a keeper.
01/13/2011
I made this tonight and with my "tweaks" it was a real hit. I changed it by adding: 1 1/2 c. beef bouillion 1t. ground ginger 1 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 1 T. finely chopped crystallized ginger 1/2 c. chopped onion We like a lot of sauce so I thickened it with a little cornstarch
03/22/2009
I found this to be pretty tasty but I don't think it was 5 star worthy... It was good, especially if you are looking for a fast, a little different, tasty dinner! Thanks for the recipe!
08/05/2005
Made with beef and turkey, both were excellent! Quick, easy and reheats well.
03/01/2004
I made this recipe with slices of pork instead of the ground beef and it was Fantastic!!!
04/06/2009
This was very nice.I followed another reviewer's idea and made Lettuce wraps with Romaine leaves.I did cut my peppers in cubes. I used some Hoisin sauce for a dip; turned out so good!
11/08/2012
great recipe. I also use a halepeno pepper, twice the chili sauce and a can of diced tomatoes if I don't have or use the beef broth. The juice from the tomatoes makes enough broth.
05/30/2012
Very good! I didn't have any green pepper so I used chopped Vidalia onion. I doubled the sauce ingredients and a dash more crushed red pepper. Loved it!!
10/31/2007
This was the best!!! I did steak strips instead and added onion and a little bit more crushed red peppers because we like is spicy!!! My fiance was so full his stomache hurt!! :)
01/18/2005
I was very dissapointed with this recipe. It tasted more like a ground beef (ground turkey, in my case) goulash than an asian dish. Possibly I would have had different outcome if I had used sliced steak, pork, chicken or shrimp. I don't think I will make this dish again.
12/16/2006
I love this dish because it is quick and easy! I added a chopped up onion with the peppers and it was very tasty. Next time I think I will double the sauce so that there will be more to soak into the yummy rice.
09/28/2004
Doubled, this was still not excessive for my family of five. I added a sliced sweet onion too, and served it with chili sauce, so people could kick it up to their preference. Very quick, satisfying and tasty.
08/22/2008
Great! I added an onion before I browned the beef and eyeballed the crushed pepper and ginger. I served it with brown rice and just mixed it all together. I skipped the parsley because I didn't have any. Yum!
01/14/2008
This was a great change from usual ground beef recipes. I added some vegetables - leeks, snow peas, carrots, broccoli - and increased the amount of liquids to make up for the additional vegetables. Will make again! Thanks!
08/20/2008
I made this recipe initially by modifying to make it Vegan for my vegan sister and her husband. I used the soy protein "gound beef" and vegetable broth and it was fantastic - much better than I thought it would be. I have yet to make this using ground beef... but instead prefer ground pork or ground chicken. I use a little more ginger and garlic than this recipe calls for and add water chestnuts for extra crunch. A great recipe that can be made with whatever you have on hand in your vege bin!
10/01/2007
I also added 1 chopped yellow onion, and substituted 2 fresh red chili peppers for the chili paste and substituted poblano pepper for the red bell pepper. I served this over pasta instead and with plain yogurt on the side; my husband even put some of the yogurt on top. He loved it and said it reminded him of Turkish food. Will definitely keep this recipe in the regular dinner rotation!
02/18/2007
I think this is a great recipe. My kids ask me to make it all of the time. Thanks
10/16/2004
I really liked this dish but I must of used too much beef because there was like no liquid. Next time I will double up on the liquids.
01/02/2008
My husband always orders Asian food with all the stars and I order it with none. This dish was a little too spicy for me and not enough for him, BUT it was a great compromise.
06/21/2004
It was really, really great! both for me and for my husband ~ Full of flavor! Plus, this hardly needed any other dish to finish a meal with! I want to have more stars to use to rate this one! :-)
07/12/2008
I didn't have fresh ginger so I used powder instead and it still came out really good. A great quick fix when you're running low on time.
09/02/2004
We loved this recipe! It had an interesting flavor that my husband, myself, and my 17 month old daughter just loved. Next time I make it, I want more green pepper. I think the peppers I used this time were too small and therefore the hamburger started to slightly overwhelm the flavor. But, this one is a keeper!
06/15/2007
this recipe was delious but i made a small change i used cliced steak for this
08/09/2006
I was looking for something new to do with ground beef. I found this recipe and it was outstanding! I did not have chili paste, so that was omitted with no problems. I also sprinkled a little flour on the ground beef beef before adding the liquids, thus thickening the sauce ultimately. Using store bought chopped ginger (the kind in a jar that gets refrigerated after opening) was helpful. My kids and husband all asked for seconds!
04/03/2015
Found this to be very good. I cooked the meat (used ground turkey), then added the seasonings, then added green pepper/onion/diced carrots to it. My company loved it over brown rice, and I was very pleased to be able to have used ground meat to make a good Asian style dish.
01/11/2007
This was really good! I used more spices though, 1/4 tsp just didn't seem like enough. Next time I might add some mushrooms.
01/24/2007
This recipe is very tastey. I could not find chili paste so I used a tbls.of tomato paste and some chili powder. It turned out very good.
08/04/2009
This was bland even after I added several spices. I won't make this again.
02/23/2010
This is very good! But more importantly, it reminds me very much of the canned LaChoy Stir Fry Vegetable mix that you add ground beef to. My mom used to make this all the time when I was a kid. It was served over Asian RiceaRoni with slivered almonds. I used red and green pepper, added onion and carrot, and used both fresh and powdered ginger. It is a 4 star meal, but gets the extra star for giving me a sentimental trip back to my childhood!
05/18/2010
nothing special had to add extra spices to jazz it up
04/05/2007
add onion.Jack loved this one.
04/10/2006
Very good. Everybody loved it.
02/04/2005
I am always looking for ground beef recipes, because we have a whole freezer full of ground elk meat at home (much leaner than beef!), and this made a decent weeknight meal. Except grating the ginger always takes SO long!??!? I agree it was more spicy than flavorful, not a good recipe for a dinner party.
10/29/2008
Average.
10/16/2005
This was good but would have been much better with a diffrent meet. I didn't have chilli past so I used tomato past. It just was not that good sorry
01/29/2007
I am very happy I made this recipe. Was looking for something new to do with grounde beef other than spaghetti or chili. I used the ingredients I had. There were a few alterations like adding more stock, soy and worcestshire sauce for flavor. Other than that I was very pleased.
02/25/2006
Boyfriend said, amidst mmm-ing noises, "You can make this all the time. This is my favorite ever." I used about half the beef, but that's something I normally do with recipes calling for ground beef. Instead of serving it over rice, we mixed it with Nasoya Chinese noodles.
01/11/2010
Flavor is good but better as a stirfry with steak rather than ground beef. I also added mushrms. And stired 1tsp cornstarch into the beef stock so the sauce would be thick.
09/15/2008
The taste reminded me a bit of sukiyaki that I ate in Japan. I used banana peppers and green beans - doubled the sauce and added a little brown sugar. Next time I think I'll try making the stir fry with mushrooms and spinach.
01/17/2005
This was very tasty. I used thin sliced steak instead of hamburger and added about 1/4 cup of cooking sherry. I served it over linguine and my family enjoyed it.
06/09/2005
This dish smelled so good while it's cooking and the taste didn't disappoint. I used one each of a green, yellow, and red bell pepper and two dashes of cayenne red pepper instead of chili paste and 1/2 c. beef broth instead of 1/4 c. (this soaked into the rice and made the dish a little jucier). This will become a regularly cooked meal for my husband and me.
09/02/2008
This was okay, not great, was missing something..Tasted bland.
07/30/2010
This is a great weeknight meal. I liked the Asian twist to ground beef also. My biggest change was to use brown rice rather than jasmine rice.
07/25/2009
This was surprisingly good - I was a bit skeptical, using ground beef in a stir-fry, but the flavor was great! I didn't have chili paste, so I used a thai garlic paste instead - yum! Like others, I used more liquid and spices, since ground beef tends to be pretty dry. Next time, I'll try it with broccoli and water chestnuts. All in all, an inventive way to use ground beef!
05/29/2007
I was looking for ways to use up ground beef and found this. It is very quick, easy, and delish. The kids even liked it. Tonight I am also going to add some baby carrots.
08/15/2006
Increase the amount of beef stock by 1/4 of a cup and allow to reduce for 5-6 minutes
04/08/2008
Considering the amount of flavor components that go into this dish, I found it to be surprisingly bland. Edible, a nice change of pace, but not memorable.
01/12/2020
Simple, easy and very tasty! I used ground venison with a small amount of ground pork sausage I had on hand. I skipped the crushed red pepper as husband is not a fan of hot and spicy and I used siracha instead of chili paste. I used ground ginger as well. I will make again especially since my husband could not tell it was venison... he's not a fan of venison.
02/04/2017
needed a little more flavor
05/15/2019
This dish was easy and sooooo good. I love it! I will definitely keep making this dish!
06/16/2007
I didn't have chilie past instead i used 1 dried red chili and it turned out lovely! although i'm not really a fan of ginger much so i tapered down to 1 tablespoon and added some green peas as well. My husband loved it!
07/03/2007
This was economical and quick, but the taste showed it. I found it ok, but my husband hated it and he eats anything. So many others reviewed it highly, however, so I guess it's just a matter of taste!
12/06/2016
I just happened to have all the ingredients for this (and not much of anything else) and was delighted at how quick, easy and unique it was. Even more delicious when my teenage sons said "this is awesome!". Will do it again!!
08/09/2016
It was delicious, just used a little extra soy sauce at the table!
05/01/2015
excellent flavors and easy to make! I've made this several times so far.
02/26/2019
I made this and it was goooooooood! I sliced peppers into wedges and added an onion to the recipe. I also tossed seasonings with vegetables in a bowl before placing them in the skillet. I also used garlic infused olive oil instead of regular. Next time I will add some brown sugar for a sweet and spicy flavor.
03/13/2007
This was just the right amount of spicy. I used dried ginger because I didn't have any fresh, and it was still good.
08/03/2006
I made this as a surprise lunch for my husband. He's been craving Asian food for a while now and he was very pleased! I didn't have the chili paste, so I used tomato paste. I used beef broth instead of the beef stock and I couldn't notice a difference :-) My husband thoroughly enjoyed this meal...and he has leftovers for tomorrow!! :-) Thanks for this delicious recipe!
02/19/2018
Fantastic recipe. If you do not want a slow burn build up (kid friendlier) do not use chili paste. Substitute with a store bought sweet chili sauce instead.
06/17/2007
This was actually much better than I expected. I pretty much just eyeballed the seasonings, and I also omitted the parsley due to personal preference. Quick, easy and tasty. Thanks!
03/23/2018
i wasnt as impressed as i had hoped. it wasnt very flavourful. needed more sauce and the sauce was missing something ... not sure what ??
06/29/2019
Great flavor! I did triple the liquid measurements and had plenty to pour over the rice. Added water chestnuts for crunch. Will definitely have again. Thanks for the recipe!
05/28/2021
This was amazing! Easy and quick. I topped it with green onions, sesame seeds and hoisin sauce. I made it with 3 minute noodles this time. Next time I'll try it with rice.
09/16/2020
I doubled the recipe, but used 3 bell peppers and an onion. The garlic was powder, and I had no chili paste so I shook on an extra shake of chili pepper flakes. I used a cup of reconstituted beef broth. Added some corn starch and called it dinner! It was great
02/12/2015
We loved this! I added some carrots and celery, doubled the stock, soya and Worcestershire, and omitted the crushed red pepper. Doing this gave some heat but did not overpower the other flavours. Served this over udon noodles.
